4 Tricks to Revive Your Lawn after an Extreme Winter

Your lawn needs help during spring to prepare it for the upcoming growing season so it can look its best throughout the remainder of the year. Here are a few tips to prepare and revitalize your lawn:

1. Give Your Property a Thorough Spring Cleanup

Start by removing debris such as leaves and fallen branches from the grass. Dead leaves retain excess moisture that leads to fungal disease while creating a habitat for lawn damaging insect pests. Once the debris is gone, give the lawn a good raking in order to remove the dead grass which can create an unhealthy mat over the new grass if it isn’t removed. This step will also increase the effectiveness of subsequent seeding and fertilizing.

2. Set Your Lawn up for Success by Slit Seeding

Slit seeders are machines used to repair lawns with bare spots or thin grass. They create closely spaced slices in the turf while simultaneously dropping in new seed. This treatment significantly increases germination rates over the traditional method of simply broadcasting the seed over the lawn. Two right angle passes are made to ensure good coverage. At the time of seeding, the lawn should have a well-balanced organic fertilizer applied. Slit seeding creates a lush, vigorous lawn in a short time.

3. Touch up your Lawn Edging to Look Tidy

Edging your lawn around flower beds, pathways and patios once it has been cleaned up gives your yard a professional look, giving a clean line and preventing grass overgrowth into your landscape features.

As the weather warms and mowing increases, you need to stay on top of the edging to maintain that clean look.

4. Refresh Mulch to Promote Shrub Health

Mulch around shrubs, trees and flowers should be refreshed every year. Areas to be mulched should be cleaned of debris and then new material should be added on top. Any type of mulch helps retain moisture during dry months, which benefits both your shrubs and flowers. Organic types of mulch keep the underlying soil loose as they compost, which makes weed removal much easier. Fresh mulch improves the landscaping’s aesthetic design as well.

As retirees who now travel, we need to be able to trust those who look after our home and yard. Kory and his staff did an amazing job, and for a very fair price. After we returned from a vacation our neighbors shared that Kory and his team completed the snow shoveling exactly as was scheduled; even on the bitterly cold days! We will continue to hire Kory each time we are on vacation.
