Georgetown Landscaping Construction Project Tips

Ontario residents know the importance of spending time outdoors. With several months of the year punctuated by cold spells, snow and ice, most homeowners are ready to enjoy warm weather and sunny days when they arrive. Backyard patios, outdoor kitchens and other gathering spaces are one of the best ways to take advantage of spring, summer and fall.

If you are planning a do-it-yourself backyard construction project, there are several things to keep in mind. Even if you hire a Brampton-Georgetown landscaping service to do the hard work for you, it’s important to know what they will consider in the design and construction process.

Patio and Walkway Design

Though there are any number of backyard project construction guides available, designing a new landscape feature to fit in your yard takes some skill. The materials, style, shapes and finished form all have to blend together in a way that feels right and works well for your home. If you have any doubts about this aspect of the project, consulting with a professional landscape designer is a good investment.

Grading and Drainage

Some amount of earthwork – digging, shaping, compacting and more – is required for almost every outdoor construction project. Patios and walkways need to be built on compacted, stable soil, but they also need to drain. Below ground, there should be a base course of washed aggregate to provide subsurface drainage. Above ground, there needs to be a cross slope so that water flows across the surface of the pavers. On the downhill edge of the pavement, there has to be a place for this surface water to go, and, here in Georgetown, snow removal storage.

Make sure you understand the drainage aspects of your project before starting. Improperly managing surface drainage and below-ground conditions are the biggest causes of uneven settling and other interlocking paver problems.

Layout and Construction

Almost every project should have a plan on paper, drawn to scale. This helps you estimate materials, but more importantly, serves as a guide during construction. It does not have to be professionally drawn, but it should be accurate.

As retirees who now travel, we need to be able to trust those who look after our home and yard. Kory and his staff did an amazing job, and for a very fair price. After we returned from a vacation our neighbors shared that Kory and his team completed the snow shoveling exactly as was scheduled; even on the bitterly cold days! We will continue to hire Kory each time we are on vacation.
