Surrey Landscaping Design Plans for Your Home Landscape
As much fun as it is to grab some tools, head into the backyard with an idea in your head and start working, results are usually better when landscape projects are based on an actual plan. In addition to serving as a visual guide, a landscape plan will help you think through all the steps involved in your project before you start work. Whether you draw your own sketch on the back of an envelope or hire a Surrey landscaping company to prepare a master plan, here are some things to be aware of as you start the planning process.
Characteristics of a Landscape Plan
A good landscape plan will be drawn accurately to scale. For example, one inch on paper equals ten feet of actual distance in your yard. This allows you to calculate the amount of materials you need, such as cubic yards of mulch or square yards of sod. It also gives you a reference to stake the locations of plants, walkways, walls and other features outside.
Plans are often produced in colour and illustrated to give a feel for what the final project will look like. Construction plans and details are more straightforward; just the essential information drawn clearly with all sizes and materials labelled.
A master plan covers your entire property, presenting a vision for how you would ultimately like your yard to look and function. It is useful to have a master plan, even if you are only planning a small landscape project. In considering everything that might eventually happen in your yard, you avoid future conflicts and have each individual project serve as a step toward the overall plan.
A master plan does not have to be overly detailed. That allows you to save on cost and focus on the details of each individual project when it is time to install it. For example, a master plan might show a planting bed for summer flowering perennials in front of low evergreen shrubs. In a final planting plan, you or your designer decide what each of those individual plant species should be.
Even for do-it-yourself types that are good with a hammer and shovel, it’s a good idea to prepare a sketch plan. It doesn’t have to be great art; just sketch out your ideas, whether it is the arrangement of plants or how the components of a deck fit together. It helps you list the materials needed, and you will probably have a new idea about the project in the process.
There are lots of plans for planting and construction online, but they may not be appropriate for this region. Consult with your local Surrey landscaping company if you are not sure. A good landscape plan gives you something to focus on in your yard besides lawn maintenance.
